Based in McLean, Virginia, Mars Incorporated currently spans six business segments including; Chocolate, Petcare, Wrigley, Food, Drinks, and Symbioscience. As one of the leading food manufacturers in the world, Mars has a significant international presence in more than 74 countries with net sales of more than $33 billion and more than 72,000 associates worldwide. In 2010, Mars committed to become ‘Sustainable in a Generation’ through eliminating fossil fuel energy use and greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) in their operations by 2040 with a 25 percent reduction by 2015. In addition, Mars is tracking sustainability metrics for water usage, refrigerant usage, raw material consumption, waste generation, recycling, and renewable energy.
Mars selected Enablon’s Metrics (SD) module to gather, quantify, and report on their GHG and sustainability metrics. E2 was retained by Mars to assist in the two phased deployment plan. Phase 1 of the implementation began in Q3 of 2013, which included Scope 1 & 2 GHG emissions. Phase 2 of the implementation launched in Q1 of 2014, which includes Scope 3 GHG emissions.
For Mars, E2 has primarily acted as a subject matter expert (SME) in the domain of GHG emissions and sustainability data management and reporting. E2 was brought into the Mars project specifically to provide a third party review of the existing configuration and to help with system optimization prior to the Phase 1 go-live. In this capacity, for the GHG implementation E2 reviewed the emission equation configuration (for Scopes 1, 2 & 3), as well as the corporate roll-up/consolidation calculations and trending calculations. E2 also verified that the correct emission factors were being applied from various GHG protocols worldwide. In addition, E2 has provided Mars with expert review of their additional sustainability metrics. Prior to entering the final user acceptance testing (UAT) period, E2 helped Mars to perform a data comparison check against their legacy sustainability reporting system to validate the Enablon configuration. E2 is currently in the process of supporting the Phase 1 user acceptance testing.
